Stainless steel jewellery: does it turn black, and how do you care for it?

Bijoux en acier inoxydable : noircissent-ils, et comment les entretenir ?

No, stainless steel does not turn black: it does not tarnish or oxidise on contact with air, water or sweat. What can change over time is the gold-tone finish applied to some pieces, which is sensitive to perfume, chlorine, seawater and friction. A simple routine, with a soft cloth and warm soapy water, is all it takes to keep your jewellery looking clean.

Why stainless steel does not turn black

Stainless steel is an alloy that contains chromium. On contact with air, this chromium forms a very thin, invisible layer on the surface that protects the metal. If scratched, it rebuilds itself. That is why a stainless steel piece keeps its colour over the years, whereas other metals darken or turn green.

So the question "does stainless steel turn black?" has a clear answer: no. A piece worn every day may pick up a faint film (soap, cream, limescale): it rinses off and is not oxidation.

Silver-tone steel or gold-tone finish: what changes

A silver-tone steel piece simply shows the natural colour of the metal, polished or brushed. There is nothing to wear away: the colour is the material itself, all the way through.

A gold-tone finish, on the other hand, is a colour applied to the surface of the steel. It holds up well day to day, but it is still a layer: what damages it is not time, it is what it goes through. Its main enemies:

  • Perfume and alcohol-based products: spray them before putting the piece on and let your skin dry.
  • Chlorine from swimming pools and household products, which attack the surface.
  • Seawater: salt and sand act as a mild abrasive.
  • Repeated friction: a bracelet rubbing against a desk, a ring gripping a handle, a clasp that always touches the same spot. These contact points are often the first to fade.

So does gold-tone steel last? Yes, if you treat it as a finish: taken off in risky situations, it keeps its shine far longer. The men's rectangular signet ring comes in gold-tone or silver-tone: if you never take your ring off, the silver-tone version will need less attention.

Shower, pool, sea: keep it on or take it off?

Silver-tone steel is very forgiving, gold-tone finishes are more delicate. A quick guide:

How to care for steel jewellery: a four-step routine

  • After wearing: a wipe with a soft, dry cloth removes fingerprints, cream and sweat.
  • Every so often: a quick soak in warm, lightly soapy water (mild soap, nothing harsh), then a rinse in clean water. For fine chains, a soft toothbrush helps reach between the links.
  • Dry thoroughly: pat dry with a soft cloth, then let it air-dry before putting it away, paying attention to clasps and links.
  • Store separately: each piece in its own pouch or compartment. Steel is hard and can scratch a gold-tone finish placed next to it, and chains tangle quickly.

Avoid abrasives, bleach and metal cleaners not designed for jewellery. On mirror-polished steel, a microfibre cloth brings back the shine.

Stainless steel and sensitive skin

Stainless steel has a reputation for being well tolerated, and many people wear it without any discomfort. We remain cautious, however: every skin reacts in its own way, and no one can guarantee that a piece will suit everybody. If you know you are sensitive to certain metals, check the composition listed on each product page and, if in doubt, ask a healthcare professional before wearing jewellery in prolonged contact with your skin.

Not every piece in a collection is made of the same material (stainless steel or alloy): the product page always says which.

Frequently asked questions

Does stainless steel turn black over time?

No. It does not tarnish or oxidise. A faint film of soap or limescale can appear, and it comes off with a rinse and a soft cloth.

Can I wear stainless steel jewellery in the shower?

Silver-tone steel, yes, as long as you dry it properly afterwards. A gold-tone finish is best taken off, as soap, limescale and friction eventually mark it.

Does a gold-tone finish on steel wear off?

It can fade at friction points, more or less quickly depending on use. Kept away from perfume, chlorine and seawater, it lasts much longer.
